In the village today, we met an old man who had been blinded by a witch doctor when he had attended for an eye complaint. And in the classroom this afternoon, we met some reformed witch doctors, now a part of the 'farmers' club' who showed us some of their tricks used to deceive people (it was basically a magic show!).
But seriously, the whole concept of deception - using the fear of people to extort their money, health and livelihoods... *sadface*/F R U S T R A T I N G.
Also, there was definitely a strong difference between the village that wasn't a part of the Jamkhed CRHP health project, and this village that was. Not only in the sanitation and well-being of the people, but I think it was felt through the general community atmosphere.
It was great to walk around this town and see so many people E A T I N G !!
I'm not sure though if it is because they are used to foreigners coming through their town, but we also got offered a lot of things, like the bread in the above images, and often things that I can't remember the Marathi/Hindi names of.
I also still don't know what 'Hilga' is... Yesterday when I was walking alone to the lake, there were a bunch of girls sitting in the sorghum fields who invited me over to share their 'hilga?'... they didn't know what the English word for it was though, and Chris from the Netherlands who I crossed paths with on my way back to CRHP responded with "WHO IZ THZ HILGA? I KNOW NOT THZ HILGA?!" (to my great amusement)
AHHhhhH THESE GIRLS ARE LIKE THE INDIAN SHINING !!!!
above: eating peas and testing a pregnant woman and old man's urine, woo! below: village pastor who was about to give a talk which included topics such as female infanticide, woo!
Yes, that's a puppet show. Performed by farmers. To Bollywood music.
Ta-Ta!
